Short answer
Start with usable sightseeing days, not hotel nights. Three nights often leave two full days between arrival and departure. A transfer day with sightseeing stops still needs space for the journey, luggage and hotel check-in.
There is no single ideal split. Choose the places that match your interests, then protect enough time for the experiences you care about most.
Dali: consider one or two full days
One full day can introduce the old town and a selected lakeside or village area. A second day gives you more room for Bai culture, countryside, food or mountain time without combining everything into one outing. Add time here if a relaxed pace is a priority.
Lijiang: consider two full days
Separating a cultural day from a mountain day is a useful starting point. Baisha, Shuhe and Dayan each offer a different setting; UNESCO includes all three within the Old Town of Lijiang World Heritage property. Choose a smaller selection if you prefer to linger. A mountain excursion needs its own plan for the season and available activities.
Shangri-La: consider one or two full days
An initial day can focus on town and a selected cultural visit. Another day creates room for a nature outing at a comfortable pace. Longer excursions beyond your base need a separate time allowance; they should not be treated as quick additions to a full day.
What should you leave out?
With around five days, focusing on Dali and Lijiang, with a carefully chosen Shaxi stop or overnight, may be more enjoyable than adding every destination. With a longer trip, Shangri-La becomes easier to include. A multi-day gorge hike or a journey toward Meili requires time of its own.
Before adding a night anywhere, identify what would be shortened elsewhere. Keep arrival and departure commitments fixed, and check the remaining sightseeing time again.

Common questions
Is an extra Dali night worth it?
Yes if you want slower village, lake or food time. If Lijiang’s mountain visit and cultural sights are priorities, protect those days first.
Can travel time be estimated from city names alone?
Only roughly. Hotel locations, stops, traffic, season and the final route affect the day. We confirm the practical sequence once these details are known.
